Espresso
In Italian, it literally means "pressed out" coffee. A shot of espresso is strong black coffee made by forcing high pressure steam and hot water through ground coffee beans.
Macchiato
In Italian, the word means "stained" or "marked". A macchiato is an espresso drink, topped with a small amount of foamed milk to allow the taste of the espresso to shine through.
Marocchino
Derived from the Italian word for "Moroccan" to describe a light brown leather color used to make hair bands . . . as a type of light brown leather used to make hair bands in the 1930's. Gibraltar / Cortado
Named after an iconic rocks glass with arches on the side and a tapered octagonal bottom. It is prepared nearly the same way as a cappuccino, except served in a Gibraltar glass which tends to retain heat less than ceramic, so the drink temperature is cooler.
Cappuccino
An espresso based drink with equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk. Caffe Latte
An espresso based drink with a large ratio of steamed milk to espresso. This creates a mild and creamy flavor.
Caffe Americano
This Italian name translates to "American coffee". It originated during WWII when American soldiers stationed in Italy diluted espresso with hot water to recreate the drip coffee they were used to from back home. The Italian baristas were amused by this adaptation and began calling it “Caffe Americano" or "Americano".
